What you can do about the Coronavirus

How are you feeling? Has all the news and stories around Coronavirus made you anxious? I am feeling overwhelmed with how quickly it is spreading and that daily there are more and more people getting infected by it. As much as I know worrying is not the answer as worrying about it will only make me more anxious and stressed, it will also not solve the problem. However, there are a few things we can do to help boost our immune system and keep us grounded during this time.

How to boost your immune system:

1. Reduce stress.

Stress is known for depleting one's immune system. I suggest every time you notice you are starting to get stressed is to stop and take 3 deep breathes or doing a quick 5 min meditation to help keep you calm. I use an App called Breathe.

2. Start adding Vitamin C to your daily routine.

Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that can help protect your body & boost your immunity. Start adding 1 Tbs Camu Camu to your morning smoothie or including citrus fruits as a snack as well as adding plenty of green veg to every meal and snack. Other antibacterial and antiviral foods to include in your diet is Manuka Honey, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar.

3. Include food sources of zinc in your diet.

Zinc is a great mineral for fighting off bacteria and other viruses protecting your immune system. I suggest eating pumpkin seeds, nuts, leafy green veg and sustainably caught seafood.

4. Eat a wholesome whole foods diet.

Minimise processed foods and eat a diet that is abundant in vitamins and minerals which includes fresh fruit & veg, legumes, whole grains, sustainably caught fish, pasture-raised and organic meat & eggs. Stay away from sugars, additives, artificial, processed and refined foods which don't have little, if any, nutritional value.

5. Reintroduce healthy hygiene habits.

Make sure you wash your hands regularly and that there is hand sanitizer or natural, chemical free hand wash at every basin/sink in the house. Make sure to dry your hand with paper towel and limit touching communal doors, railings etc. Stand away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing and cover your face when sneezing or coughing too (even if that cough is just a throat tickle.
